Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Windy City Mayor and State Executive as Military Forces Deploy in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald J. Trump on midweek called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for failing to secure ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on his platform early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker too!"

Both officials are members of the Democratic faction.

These remarks come alongside the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Chicago region following directives from the current government, notwithstanding strong objections from Illinois authorities such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump has sought to have a Black man unjustly detained," Johnson responded on that day. "I am staying put."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, declaring: "I refuse to back down. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of elected officials resisting his authority. What's next on the road toward full-blown autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard troops from Texas had arrived at the Elwood training facility, an army base roughly 80 kilometers from Chicago, as the federal government advances with its hardline urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

The president has labeled Chicago a "dangerous disaster zone", even though police data indicate notable reductions in most criminal activities, including murders.

On Wednesday, two hundred state guard troops were scheduled to arrive to the Chicago area, with another 300 state military forces readying for deployment, per sources. Authorities reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid police functions but would secure federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with Texas national guard insignia were observed at the US army reserve center in the town. Trucks labeled "Disaster Relief" delivered portable toilets and essential items. Mobile units were set up in lines. Additional fencing was installed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed flight restrictions over the army reserve center for safety concerns until 6 December.

The administration has intensified immigration enforcement in Chicago in the past month, triggering protests, especially near an immigration center in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit against the federal government, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a court to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'Battle'" on the city and state, labeling it "illegal and risky".

A court hearing on their case is set for Thursday.

Mayor Johnson also signed an directive on that day prohibiting federal immigration agents and related personnel from using city-owned property as operation bases for deportation efforts.

The governor has charged the president of using military forces as "political props" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on Tuesday, Pritzker said that the president is trying to "justify and normalize the presence of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old federal law limits the military's role in civilian law enforcement. However, the president has said he would be prepared to activate the Insurrection Act, which allows a commander-in-chief to dispatch regular army in states that are failing to suppress an insurrection or are resisting national authority.

After beginning his second term, the president has dispatched or mentioned deploying military units to over ten cities, including major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, claiming that the military presence is essential to combat crime and protect ICE officers.

Data shows that serious offenses nationwide has declined in the past few years. In Chicago, for example, murders were reduced 31% to under three hundred through August, per law enforcement reports.

A recent poll released on Wednesday found that most Americans oppose the deployment of troops without an foreign danger.
